What’s laughable about this article is that Mark Thomas was actually right. Watch their Montreal sets – Mark’s was in 1990 and Bill’s was in 1992. Bill wasn’t doing most of the important 92 material before he saw Mark Thomas doing it in 90.

Okay, so Mark didn’t have the stagecraft of Hicks, but he did have the material of Hicks, before Hicks.

Denis Leary stole a lot of the surface attributes of Hicks’ act, and the smoking bit. Hicks lifted a good portion of his set from Mark Thomas, and he ripped off all the shouty preacher shit from Kinison’s act. He was great at what he did, don’t get me wrong – but he wasn’t some paragon of comedic virtue.

It is rare in life to come across someone as special as Bill Hicks – anywhere in life, not just in show business.Most other “comedians”, after seeing Bill Hicks just once, should have realized they were pathetic pretenders who didn’t even belong on stage.They should have done themselves and everyone else a favor and retired – right then and there.It’s amazing to me that so many idiots can still go out there and “perform” such mindless garbage – like trained monkeys. Shouldn’t artists evolve? What’s happened to us? I comfort myself by thinking that somewhere out there is another original.There has to be.

Bill was and still is timeless..

What he had to say back then still rings true today, whilst Denis Leary currently voices an animated sabre toothed tiger in a Disney film. Wow.

Thanks for writing this. Bill Hicks is the fucking man ( and if you’ve never read it, check out the Comic series Preacher – lots of Bill Hicks material and a few cameo appearances ) and a voice that needs to continually be heard.

denis stole bills jokes fact. at the denis leary roast on comedy central a joke was cut from the show that aired where a comedian did a bit saying as much.
leary is a talented guy but hicks was a genius

Id just like to say Bill is a fuckin’ hero of mine and its a shame ill never be able to see him live. He said incredible things which make a lot of sense even 15 years on. He inspired a lot of people to challenge issues and to think for themselves – a prophet taken before his time.

Um, actually Mr Shea, my girlfriend likes rescue me -I have watched the first three seasons in their ENTIRETY and can happily confirm that they are SHIT. The writing is feeble, it’s just a puff-piece for Leary’s ego – the plots use base attempts at creating dramatic moments that FAIL every time. Plus the budget is clearly lacking (a show about firemen should actually feature the odd fire, not some minute blaze that I could extinguish with piss. Denis Leary was, and indeed still is, a hack. And the fact that he now co-writes a series that is only available on pay tv supports my theory. So speaking of apologizing for inaccurate statements? Take it away Mr shea……
