Australia Arrival Two years ago today I arrived in Australia. I had a distinct sense of relief to be back in a country where I could at least speak the language, although I hadn't even tried to speak to anyone whilst in Thailand. My first day in Sydney was distinctly uneventful. Skulking off to my cheap hotel on Springfield Road in King's Cross, a leafy grove just metres away from the well-ordered sleaze of King's Cross, I arrived early, passed out and did very little else. Besides a bit more skulking. Seem to remember I was reading Ian Kershaw's Hitler: Nemesis at an outdoor cafe on my own that evening. Such a cheery soul. This set the pattern for my first few days in Sydney - spending the day alone at various delectable cafes on Victoria Road, (Delectica and Joe's Cafe being my favourite two haunts), reading the paper from cover to cover, reading books, sleeping, only saddened by the hunt for the evening meal, finding somewhere to eat alone that didn't make you feel alone. Not having recourse to your own kitchen makes refuelling difficult when you don't want to turn dining into an occasion. [permalink] | [1 comments]
