Disneyland With A Death Penalty Two great articles on city states and what lurks beneath their hypermodern surfaces - William Gibson's 1993 take on Singapore (which my recent visit seems to echo, 12 years on) - and Mike Davis' recently published essay on Dubai, the new playground of the rich at the expense of thousands of workers forced to live without rights in appalling slums on the city's edge. Mike Davis is also author of the fantastic Los Angeles history City Of Quartz, which sadly seems difficult to get hold of thee days.
