The Filth And The Fury
Just seen the recently released DVD of this definitive Sex Pistols documentary. Put together by Julien Temple, The Filth And The Fury shows the Pistols for what they really were - an explosion of anger within recession struck England which snowballed into an unwitting revolution. Chockful of archive footage of early Pistols gigs and seminal live performances interspersed with news reportage of the era in which the Pistols were spawned, this documentary is a fantastic chunk of history.
All the surviving Pistols provide commentary but its John Lydon who unsurprisingly gives the most insight and humour about quite what the band were about. What comes across most is the hope the Pistols provided to people before punk became another sanitised product to be sold to the masses, and what a truly squalid death came to Sid Vicious - a death which still makes Lydon break down in tears recounting it. Indeed, for all of Lydon's sarcasm and aggression, you realise it's his hatred of mediocrity and people blindly following others that spurs him on, fuelled by an innate philanthopy rather than misanthropy. The Filth And The Fury is vital not only for Pistols fans but for anyone who cares anything about the power of music to change people and circumstance.
