Black Flag
Henry Rollins releases “Smile, You’re Travelling” in the next couple of weeks , the third book in his tour diary series. I like Rollins a lot - I’m not a massive fan of his music but I like his energy and anger - especially contrasted against his intelligence, black humour and inherent humanity which are very much apparent in his spoken word shows and writing. And I’ve always liked the voyeurism of reading stuff written in journal format, although usually it’s done so with an eye on eventual publication, so it’s not without self-censorship.
The other admirable thing about Rollins is the way he’s expanded his publishing house, 2.13.61 , to start reissuing lost classics - Selby’s Last Exit To Brooklyn for example, or the entire Birthday Party back catalogue. (See Spike’s interview with Selby here). If I ever get money, I hope I’ll do something similar rather than just hoovering it up my nose and pissing it down the toilet.
