From Hell

Alan Moore's Victorian murder epic From Hell landed on my desk this morning with a satisfying thud, along with Will Oldham's "I See A Darkness" CD which I bought after hearing Johnny Cash's cover version of the title track. Hurray for Amazon. Getting book delivered to work definitely brightens up the day.

If you're interested in Will Oldham - or if you haven't got a clue about him - have a read of Steve's article about the man that we put on Spike a while ago. Dangerously coherent.

Obviously, I haven't read From Hell yet but I've heard nothing but good things about it - based loosely around the Jack The Ripper myth apparently. Anyway, I'm going to shut up about it until I've finished it.

The lovely people at Titan Books sent me Moore's first Tom Strong collection - a lavish hardback gathering together the first seven issues. I have to say it left me somewhat cold - there's certainly no doubt that Moore loves comics and evidently enjoys getting back to the irony-free derring-do superhero action adventure that epitomises Tom Strong, but if I want to read comics like that, I'll read Dan Dare.

I have no Dan Dare in my book collection.

It's easy to see why Moore justs wants some ripsnorting fun for a bit - but Tom Strong seems an empty diversion rather than a classic to put up alongside Watchmen, V For Vendetta, Halo Jones et al.

There's lots more about Moore (ho ho) at the excellent Alan Moore Fan Site.
