Snakes alive!
The inestimable Terry Gilliam gets the in-depth tribute site treatment at Dreams - lots to chew on for those who like their films slighly psychotic and visually sumptuous. The likes of Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas and The Man Who Killed Don Quixote are a long way from Gilliam’s fledgling film-making days, when he made Monty Python And The Holy Grail and Life Of Brian. Of all the Pythons, it’s Gilliam that seems to have travelled furthest from his early ideas rather than retreading them.
Which reminds me - I read Monty Python Speaks! a few months ago, a whacking great book from that’s made up entirely of conversations with the surviving Pythons (Graham Chapman RIP) and lots of glorious photos. Reading it vividly brought home the tears, anger, group fighting and general unfunniness that seems to bedog the making of all great comedy. Holy Grail in particular sounded like an absolute nightmare, with everyone having no money and no real idea what they were doing either. It’s not all doom and gloom, obviously, but it is quite a serious book on the whole with few belly laughs to be had. John Cleese comes over as particularly pompous at times with his penchant for over-analysis and revisionism. For all that, it’s an absolute essential for Python fans if they want to get as close as they can to what went on behind Monty Python’s surreal scenes.
The official Monty Python site is still thriving with some particularly thriving message boards.
And now for something completely different…
Two blogs I’ve been enjoying recently are plasticbag.org and Little Yellow Different. I think because both are concise, funny, honest and bitchy in roughly equal measure. I find it really hard to be honest when I write. In fact this entire entry is a lie…
