Sniffin’ Glue Tripped over news of Irvine Welsh…
Sniffin’ Glue
Tripped over news of Irvine Welsh’s new book on Amazon.co.uk today - it’s called “Glue” and it’ll be published on 3rd May 2001. No other details available - I had a hunt around the Net but couldn’t find anything else. It came as no surprise that Welsh’s publisher Random House had no further info available on their pitiful site.
In the wake of all the revelations about most of the Tory Shadow Cabinet having smoked pot at some point in their lives, I thought it apposite to republish The Agony And The Ecstasy, an article I wrote a few years ago about the impact of Trainspotting on the UK drug legalisation debate. Even though bits of it make me wince on re-reading it, I reckon it still has some valid points - and the books mentioned are still definitely highly recommended.
Mr Welsh and drugs provide a neat segue into my discovery of the day - an anthology of writing from the original punk fanzine Sniffin’ Glue reproduced in fat book format. Sniffin’ Glue is one of those seminal fanzines I’ve heard so much about but never been able to get my hands on - now it’s just fallen straight into my lap. Well, once I’ve handed over some sponds for it.
Finished Ballard’s Super-Cannes yesterday. Chilling stuff. Thoroughly recommended. I just hope to God my new job doesn’t turn into Ballard’s vision of the work ethic in the 21st century… Speaking of which, I acquired my new flat in London yesterday (hence the lack of blogging). I was reading From Hell this afternoon and suddenly realised that Alan Moore’s Victorian gothic epic is set in exactly the district I’ll be living - Whitechapel. And I’m moving on Halloween. Cue Twilight Zone music…
Finally, there’s a new competition on Spike - win a copy of The League Of Gentlemen’s A Local Book For Local People - hurrah!
