Albini
Hello, I’ll be adding to the weblog along with Chris. So, I’ll start as I don’t mean to go on and talk about music.
Today, I received Will Oldham’s live EP More Revery in the post from Palace Records. It’s got covers of songs by PJ Harvey, Bill Withers and country star Tim McGraw. One song contains the immortal line “So I told you I was happy for you, and given the chance, I’d lie again.” Unfortunately, it’s no longer available, anywhere.
A couple of Oldham records have been produced by Steve Albini, frontman to legendary 80s band Big Black, and also one of Nirvana’s producers. He’s written a powerful piece on the record industry, which is necessary reading, and it explains, to me, how artists like Oldham might be turned into something as glib and vacuous as Travis or the appallingly-named Coldplay.
