Turning Up Paid a visit to the old Tate Gallery…

Written by:Chris Mitchell.

Turning Up

Paid a visit to the old Tate Gallery last Saturday - Tate Britain - to see the Turner Prize nominees. Hmm - it’s been a while since I’ve been excited about stuff entered for the Prize, but Glenn Brown’s paintings are absolutely fantastic - the Turner Prize website doesn’t really do justice to any of the artists’ works, so don’t let the tiny images put you off going to see it.

Tomoko Takahashi’s installation of road and construction signs along with piles of other detritus was a riot of colour and fun - very 3D pop art. Of course, you could see something similar if you looked in my living room after a particularly good night out, but still… The other two artists didn’t really do much for me - Wolfgang Tillmans is undeniably a great photographer but it was a fragmented and not especially inspiring selection of his work on display , while Michael Raedecker’s paintings didn’t do anything for me. I bet he’ll be gutted.
