Space, man
The BBC featured an interesting article on the impending end of the Russian space station Mir - it’s due to be knocked out of orbit next month and crash into the Pacific Ocean, with most of it breaking up as it comes through the atmosphere. Brian Burrough’s Dragonfly is one of the most gripping books I’ve read (see review here), and its description of the American and Russian colloboration on Mir painfully demonstrates that for all the advancement of technology since the moon landings, we’re still basically expecting people to reel around space in glorified tin cans. All too often the all-important human aspect of space exploration gets lost in the sense of history and scientific progress - Dragonfly makes the danger of life in space fully apparent, and also the bravery of those astronauts who went to live aboard Mir.
