Between the Lines
A few days ago I read a sentence including the words the late Michael Hamburger. Hamburger was one of the great translators of German. Ralph Mannheim brought us the novels, Hamburger the poets. His most notable success was the impossible-to-translate Paul Celan, but also Celans great forebear Friedrich Hlderlin (the Penguin edition doesnt appear on Amazon). Hamburger also appears as a character in WG Sebalds very odd but very rewarding book The Rings of Saturn.
In searching for an obituary, I found a site called, uninspiringly, Between the Lines. In spite of this, it has long, engrossing extracts of book-length interviews with veteran poets such as Thom Gunn, Seamus Heaney as well as Michael Hamburger. See also Anthony Hechts grim memories of his time liberating occupied Europe in World War II.
