Bonnie Prince Billy

Will Oldham, aka Bonnie Prince Billy, has new LP out tomorrow, and its a corker. Despite all the excessively-worded reviews about redneck darkness, Ease Down the Road is an uplifting collection of 12 even songs. On first listen, because of the evenness, it is as flat as the 1996 masterpiece Arise Therefore. However, theres more to it than banjos, brute choirs in down-homey singalongs and the familiar cracked-open voice of the man himself. But what is it?

The first song May it always be is a love letter to his special lady, with a cheesy gee-tar solo added for good measure, while the last Rich Wife Full of Happiness - is a celebration of carnality, including the memorable lines: I licked you dry until you are laughing. My fingers in your behind and I woke up fat and almost unhappy. But the bigger the laugh, the bigger the belly.

Its more than to be going on with, and I must be very happy.
