Light Holiday Reading
Whilst away I got through two books - Turned On, a biography of Henry Rollins by James Parker and We Wish To Inform That Tomorrow We Will Be Killed With Our Families by Philip Gourevitch. The first was a workmanlike trawl through Rollins’ upbringing, a typical fan biography that competently does its job and is worth reading if you’re into Rollins. The second had such an impact on me that I’ve been trying to formulate some coherent paragraphs about it ever since I got back. Suffice to say that as an analysis of the genocide in Rwanda and a thorough dismantling of the myths surrounding the reasons for why it happened, We Wish To Inform you… is a book that restores your faith in the potential of journalism to get to the heart of the matter. The incompetence and sheer incapacity of the UN to react to the situation and cease the killing - or for that matter, to even fully grasp the reality of what was happening before it was far too late - is also meticulously detailed by Gourevitch, confronting the emptiness of words “Never again” as the West watched it happen again. I’ll be writing some more about it when it’s not so late and I’m not so tired.
