As the veneer of democracy starts to fade
Check out www.whatreallyhappened.com for a prime example of the exponential growth rate of doubt after the recent events. It is certain that a lot of what this website says is based on truth, but how can one trust someone who cant spellcheck?
For the long run, keep an eye on the excellent site Counterpunch. It also includes an intriguing double list of what the editors believe are the top 100 fiction and non-fiction books of the last century. Dont get me started on that
JM Coetzee
None of JM Coetzees novels are simply polemical or escapist, which makes them exemplary for our increasingly dichotomous world. We have the freedom to discuss the important issues of the day, yet this ends up being the freedom to discuss Posh Spices latest book. And while there is the equivalent of Apartheid terror in the new Global Economy, it is difficult to approach without seeming to go too far. Despite this, see John Pilgers recent article.
In this short and unchatty review of Coetzees new book of literary essays, it is clear Coetzee is a writer we can all learn from because everything connects. Even when he’s writing about Bach “one feels the truth emerging, as illusion after illusion is stripped away.
Some of Coetzees essays can be found in the archives of The New York Review of Books.
