Gaps in the net

Ooh, this is nice - very comfy - I think Im going like it here!

Last night I did something I don’t normally do - I went to a pseudo-political meeting at the Africa Centre in central London to watch a film. I was there because I knew the independent filmmakers that had made the documentary being shown as part of the seminar and I really wanted to see how it went down with the audience. (I’m pleased to say they loved it.)

Whilst watching it, however, I found myself side-tracked marvelling at the benefits that new technological age has given us. Here were 4 guys who had thought about an issue in Africa that concerned them, and rather than just sit back and whine and moan about it in the pub like most of us, they had got off their asses and done something about it. They got a digital camcorder and some editing equipment, flew off to Ghana and made a bloody film about it! Only ten years ago such a task would would been a financial and logistical nightmare - just look at the hoops that an independent like Derek Jarman had to leap through to get his “little films” made.

“Yes”, I thought, “media is truly becoming democratic in our digital age. Surely it could now be said to be a tool of the people.”

Sigh, how wonderful the world has become.

Sigh, like arse it has!

Only last week America had decided to shut down the only 2 ISP’s in Somalia whilst investigating into allegations of terrorist money laundering. Would this really be allowed to happen in Europe or the States? But hey, who really cares if we pull the plug on a woefully under wired Africa!?

Anyone out there fancy making a movie!?

On a lighter note, I have real problems remembering the glut of passwords I carry round in my ever shrinking brain. I think things for me are about to get worse!

And have you ever imagined what it would be like if David Mamet had written the screenplay for ‘2001′? Well those wags at the Modern Humorist have!
