Kafka and Smog
The secondary literature on Kafka is enormous yet I still look out for more. Jeremy Adlers new book is a good read despite being a short biographical work. Adler is such an intelligent critic. The book is under the label of Illustrated Lives as it is full of pictures. However, the format is small and there are much bigger books of Kafka photographs, though not so easily available. Other writers in the series include Beckett and Woolf.
One of the best sites on Kafka has been updated recently with a long and detailed essay by Mark Anderson on the Critical Editions of the German texts. Worth a read if youre into Kafka. Hes also written a book on Kafkas Dandyism called Kafka Clothes. Yes, he was a snappy dresser.
A band Ive rediscovered in the last few weeks is Smog. Its an appropriate name as it doesnt really reveal what kind of music they play. Rain on Lens is their latest, but its harsh compared to the mordant lyricism of lps such as Red Apple Falls, (the wonderfully-named) Dongs of Sevotion and Knock, Knock. All three are full of breath-taking songs. Cant find an up-to-date website, but shove Bill Callahans name into a search engine and plenty of info will appear.
