When Authors Attack

Interesting article in Wired about authors taking the bit between the teeth and building their own websites rather than waiting for their publishers to do it for them. It's a strange old game - a lot of publishers won't fund an author's website for fear that they'll leave their publishing contract early before the publisher can recoup the cost of setting the site up. This is obviously pretty short-sighted and an indication of how little money publishing houses are prepared to spend marketing individual authors - essentially nothing.

Still, as the article indicates, those authors who take the initiative themselves create a lot more interest in their work than relying on the marketing depts of their publishers. The only trouble is that maintaining a site can be a distraction from the real business of writing.

Or they can remain indifferent and wait for a silly sod like me to do it for the love of it.
