The return of the dead
The shock following WG Sebald’s accidental death last December led to a number of his admirers to reflect upon his work. Threepenny Review has collected some of them for what they call a symposium. Some are long pieces, others short. But they’re all good. And though they all seem to say the same thing, this is entirely acceptable and appropriate, as that’s what Sebald’s novels did. Look out in particular for the final piece by Arthur Lubow which relates Sebald�s fascination for an experiment on rats.
Another great German died recently too. The philosopher Hans-Georg Gadamer was 102. His major work is Truth and Method. The English press (apart from The Times) ignored his passing, perhaps because, unlike his teacher Martin Heidegger, there is no infamy attached to him. Unless your ideas can be obscured by biography, you won’t get any attention here. The English version of the Posted on March 18th, 2002.
