Poor old Tom
My Irish correspondent has been telling me of the furore caused by TV arts pundit Tom Paulin. In an interview with Al-Ahram Weekly he describes the Israeli army as Zionist SS and says that Brooklyn-born settlers should be shot: “I think they are Nazis, racists, I feel nothing but hatred for them.”
Paulin, an Ulsterman, a poet and professor of English at Oxford, is well-known in the UK for his role as Resident Fogey on the BBCs middlebrow Newsnight Review programme. Doesnt he look like a tortoise? is the constant refrain of viewers as the man winces and says of some arty-fact: I hay-ted it.
His attacks on Racists is nothing new. A few months ago he called the paratroopers who killed civilians on Bloody Sunday: racist bastards! and thugs sent in by public school boys to kill innocent Irish people (Not a controversial claim really; you have to be racist bastard to get into the British Army Code 331XC, I think youll find).
Meanwhile, the Irish Prime Minister Bertie Ahearn has been playing poodle to Dubyas whiphand. An article in The Irish Times contrasts this with Venezuelas President. I found the link to this on Narconews, which looks at the Venezuela scandal more closely.
