Starship Troopers
Just taken delivery of the DVD of Paul Verhoevens Starship Troopers. Its a film Ive always admired much to the bewilderment of friends who assume that I like European art movies only. Despite the blatant ironising of the Just Cause of fighting the Bugs, so many people regard the film as popcorn fodder. This also suggests why the propaganda method satirised in the film has been criticised as a celebration of totalitarian patriotism, leading to accusations of proto-fascism by The Washington Post. Listening to the commentary, I was impressed to hear Verhoevens co-commentator say that the film was made with Chomskys ideas of media in mind. To be honest though, I just love the bugs. As an arachnophobe, it scares me shitless in that nice filmy way.
I got the DVD along with Eloge de lAmour by Godard, which Ive mentioned twice here before. In this film, an American film company representative quotes US Senator McBride from 1910: trade follows films; and goes on to say that Washington is the real director of the ship while Hollywood is only the steward. Its a truth not lost on John Pilger who, following the racist lies of Black Hawk Down, mischievously suggests that the slaughter of up to 8,000 urban poor in George Bush Sr’s attack on Panama in 1990 would make a fine action movie. Another one for Ewen McGregor to whore himself out to perhaps?
