100% Proof

Was sent a copy of the first issue of Proof magazine recently, a new American magazine dedicated to photojournalism. It's extremely impressive, presenting an eclectic mix of topics that combines not only arresting, mostly cliche-free images but intelligent text too. From photos of Ground Zero after dark to the hedonism of beach frat parties, the articles that run alongside are thoughtful and balanced - the threat to Manhattan's meatpacking district from rabid real estate merchants is skillfully caught in words and pictures, capturing the potential destruction of one of New York's oldest business communities. Most impressive was Ian Williams' feature Forgetting Something? which shrewdly sums up the dangers of America's isolationist foriegn policy which has been going on since the Gulf War and has lead to less and less co-operation between the US and the rest of the world. Only one picture accompanied Williams' piece - a full page photo of the infamous road to Basra. Nuff said. Here's hoping Proof Magazine continues to take a non-partisan view of the world and refuses to dumb down in order to attract more readers in the cut-throat world of magazine publishing.

Proof's website is, unfortunately, absolutely awful and an embarrassment for such a well put together magazine. There isn't even subscription details on there, which is a pain for those of us who live outside the US and would want to subscribe online. Actually, now I look, they don't even have an email address. Sheesh.
