ain’t that a kick in the head
Yesterday I found myself wondering why I find the idea of a Mexican minimalist such a hard thing to get my head round. Mexicans don’t do cool. They don’t do icy intellectualism. Not in my mind. Do they?
Passion and fire. They are more like the words I think of when I try and conjure up any Mexican artists in my mind.
So why was I thinking about this paradox?
I recently happened upon the musician known as Murcof in the ever excellent Wire magazine. My interests were piqued by the idea of this musical paradox. I was intrigued enough to try and find some mp3 on the net before spent my cash on what could so easily be yet another cultural coaster.
Brilliant is not an adjective I use easily but this guy deserves it. The music is like everything I’ve ever craved from electronic music. By blending the monastic cool of classic composers like Arvo Paart and the quirky leftfield tweaks of likes of Boards of Canada Murcof has digitally captured bliss. From calm drama of the opening Memoria to its closing this debut album is entrancing.
It moved me like I was like hearing the first Aphex Twin all over again.
