Cool as Kim (and Kelley) Deal
Have just added some wondrous new articles to Spike to greet the new month and to celebrate the fact that June marks Spike’s sixth birthday. I can’t remember on what date in June 1996 I actually first published Spike, so I roll its anniversary into my own birthday. As I’m about to hit thirty, this means that I’ve been producing Spike for a fifth of my life. Possibly the most consistent thing I’ve ever managed to stick at in my life, besides, er, drinking and smoking. And breathing. Hmm.
On Saturday it also occurred to me that I have now been going to the Astoria to see gigs for at least the last 10 years - this time it was The Breeders, who were magnificent, despite the fact I only knew one track (no prizes for guessing which one). The Deal twin sisters were on top form, telling bad jokes in between supertight songs and chainsmoking cigarettes like they were compensating for a broken down dry ice machine. There’s a real euphoria to The Breeders that extends beyond their intersong banter - they got tunes, harmonies and filthy guitars which mesh perfectly together into a very, very loud sound. It’s a winning combination. Their back catalogue will soon become mine. The Guardian did a good interview with the sisters recently, and No Aloha is a decent unofficial/official Breeders site. You can also check out Kelley Deal’s groovy hand-knitted bags at kelleydeal.net
And on a related note, just learned that Throwing Muses will be putting out a new record at the beginning of next year. Marvellous. Throwing Music’s slightly chaotic site has the full story.
