In Search of (the Cash to Buy) Lost Time

Good on Penguin for funding the new translation of Marcel Prousts novel In Search of Lost Time, a.k.a. Remembrance of Things Past (even if they dont want to mention it on their website). They publish it in October: seven parts in six reasonably-priced hardback editions, each with a different translator (total price including Amazons discount, minus P&P, is 77.54 a bargain mate).

Whatever the title of the whole work, the individual parts have always retained the original translators version (the euphemistic Cities of the Plain is the exception to the rule, soon changed to the literal Sodom and Gomorrah). The first part has always been the evocative, indeed Romantic, well suggestive Swanns Way. Kirk McElhearn uses this in his online version. However, Lydia Davis, renowned translator of Maurice Blanchot, has changed it to the distinctly iffy The Way by Swanns (notice how one can find this out only by clicking on the cover photo).

The next part is In the Shadow of Young Girls in Flower rather than Within a Budding Grove. Mmm, OK. The final volume “Time Regained” however, cant be topped, certainly not by Finding Time Again. But Im not complaining really. Im quite excited: alls well that ends alright, eh?
