Grey Matter
There are few palpable ways I feel older these days except for one: I’m finding new technology increasingly hard to learn just by picking it up and playing with it. Recently I’ve found myself confounded by my DVD player, inquiring piteously of friends how to make some obscure menu item work when I used to be the Tech Daddy. Similarly, the digital camera I bought a couple of months ago (the rather nifty Nikon CoolPix 775) has sent me scurrying shamefaced to the instruction manual on several occasions. I can’t work out if things are getting more complicated or if I’m getting more stupid. Or maybe I just don’t care so much anymore - I just want things to work without even having to think about it. I’ve never been a fan of technology for its own sake, just the things it can do. That’s my excuse anyway, and I’m sticking to it.
