As someone who’s long suffered being bombarded with unintelligible press releases, it fair gladdens my soul to get ones like this. Handy for those of you living in San Francisco, not so great for the rest of us.

Literary Celebration to Shake Up San Francisco

Litquake Announced

San Francisco � Aug. 20, 2002 - The Litquake Planning Committee today announces Litquake, a literary festival to be held in San Francisco, October 11-12, 2002. Litquake will happen at different venues over the two days, including an event co-sponsored by the San Francisco Public Library. Many notable authors from a wide variety of genres will be featured - some in a spirited panel discussion, most giving live readings, all in the only celebration of its kind in San Francisco.

Some of the Bay Area�s best novelists, poets, memoirists, monologists, humorists and journalists will take part in Litquake. Following is a sampling of the more than 50 authors appearing at the festival:

� Po Bronson, “The Nudist on the Late Shift”

� Justin Chin, “Burden of Ashes”

� JT Leroy, “The Heart is Deceitful Above All Things”

� Beth Lisick, “This Too Can Be Yours”; winner, Firecracker Alternative Book Award

Friday, October 11, 6:30-8:30 p.m., Litquake kicks off with a Commonwealth Club/INFORUM event, the panel discussion �Dystopia/Utopia: Can the Bay Area Uphold a New Generation of Writers?� Moderated by Oscar Villalon, book editor, San Francisco Chronicle, the panel includes authors of diverse opinions and generations, Justin Chin,

Herb Gold, Beth Lisick, devorah major, and Peter Plate, as well as James Kass, founder and executive director of

Youth Speaks. Wine and hors d�oeuvres will be served following the program. 595 Market Street, at Second Street. Admission for Commonwealth Club/INFORUM members is $10, non-members, $18. Reservations *for this event only* taken at 415-597-6705/6706.

Saturday, October 12, Noon-6:00 p.m., Litquake excitement continues with 10-minute readings happening in two locations a short walk from each other in the heart of the city: The San Francisco Main Library’s Koret Auditorium,100 Larkin Street (entrance near the corner of Grove off of Market and Hyde Streets) and The Hiram W. Johnson State Office Building, Conference Center Auditorium B-100, 350 McAllister Street (entrance at the Earl Warren Building), between Polk and Larkin Streets. Admission for the two venues is free.

Saturday, October 12, 9:00 p.m.-1:00 a.m., Litquake�s closing event commences with readings, followed by DJ music at Edinburgh Castle Pub, San Francisco’s legendary Scottish literary pub. Born in Leith, Edinburgh, Irvine Welsh is a fitting special guest author for the venue. 950 Geary Street, between Polk and Larkin Streets. This event is strictly for ages

21 years and older. Admission is $10.
