3AM Magazines excellent and enviably substantial blog Buzzwords, written by Spike friend Andrew Gallix, isnt something I like to keep away from for too long. But lately I couldnt resize the browser after it shrank to the blogs custom size. What I mean is, I couldnt change the default setting for new windows until it fixed itself, I know not how. Im not very savvy with computers you see. Sometimes, however, my curiosity and boredom leads me to open it up anyway. Yet, at first it didnt make me happy. On August 3rd, Andrew links to Julian Evans Guardian article, and companion piece to the Radio 3 series, about European literature: The Romantic Road. I listened to it with patience, and then with poorly-concealed frustration. In the Austrian episode, and as revealed in the article, he fails to even mention the two best Austrian writers of the last century: Handke and Bernhard. I could forgive the latter as he got a programme all for himself recently, but to ignore Handke is astonishing. As you read this, just imagine me writhing on the carpet biting my thumbs as I try to contain my rage.
However, in the post below Mr Gallix cheers me up by quoting my own blog from the other night about Pilger. He calls it very interesting. Mmm.
But going back to the original blog, Andrew refers to Witold Gombrowicz as a great Polish novelist, which I cant vouch for. But I have read the first volume of his Diary. (I found all three volumes for 1 each. Amazing what you can find if youre bookshop stalker). The first page, written in 1953, begins:

You know, I couldnt have put it better myself.
