London Lit
London suffers a surprising dearth of decent literary events - you’d think there would a major author doing something here almost every week, but Time Out’s book listings usually have tumbleweed rolling through them. So, like the ubiquitous big red buses, two decent events have turned up at once. The Orange Word is a set of weekly talks given by writers running until December - Martin Amis is on this week, while Michael Ondaatje, Salman Rushdie and Germaine Greer amongst others are all due to follow. The only problem for me is that, besides Amis, none of these authors really do it for me, and the rolecall is a bit like those who have either won or just missed the Booker i.e. the usual suspects. Still, at least it’s happening, and it might spawn some other literary events in the future.
Much more my thing is the Barbican’s London Orbital event to coincide with Iain Sinclair’s book of the same name - the evening will feature not only Sinclair, but also J G Ballard, Bill Drummond and Ken Campbell. I could kiss whoever came up with that idea. Provided it’s a woman. And she’s not ugly. Chris Hall’s interview with Sinclair makes a great prelude.
