History in the Making
Centropa is a site run by “an international team of historians, filmmakers, web designers, journalists, educators, photographers and Jewish community activists” dedicated to recording the Jewish heritage of Central and Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union. Their largest project, they say, is called Witness to a Jewish Century, “a searchable online library of Jewish family pictures, and the memories that go with them”. The Reports section also looks very good with separate pages for history, fiction and memoirs, photography and journalism. Not all of it is Holocaust-related.
Meanwhile, as the UN struggles to prevent if not a holocaust then at least (further) mass murder in Iraq, check out the long, scholarly work of Nafeez Mossadeq Ahmed, that Gore Vidal, in his own, slightly-less scholarly analysis of the current situation The Enemy Within, calls “the best, most balanced report thus far”. Ahmed is a 24-year-old Bangladeshi living, coincidentally, in Brighton, once Spikes home city. I publicise these articles to counter the appalling fascistic invective and intellectual deceit that passes for “Essays and Opinion” on other, more “highbrow” sites. Read the German press of the 1930s for their heritage.
