Dead right journalists part 1
The Independent newspaper lives up to its name today. Robert Fisk’s front page report on the market square massacre (”an outrage, an obscenity”) is presented as a headline in itself. However, we will not see the “skeletal remains of an Iraqi mother and her three small children in their still-smouldering car” on any of the TV channels with 24/7 “coverage”. A similar massacre in a Serbian market was also consigned to oblivion by a compliant media. Fisk also suggests other, unreported massacres have already occurred elsewhere.
There is a sound reason for this of course. On the Medialens message board, Bill Murray shows us his letter to the BBC to congratulate it on the war coverage: “Your presenter mentioned ’strict BBC rules of taste and decency’ which prevent you showing disturbing war images. I feel patriotic to know that after starting a war unsupported by the UN, we at least have the taste and decency not to show the effects of our bombing. It reminds me of how civilised we are compared to the rest of the world.”
