Desert Island Discs

Written by:Stephen Mitchelmore.

Sunday mornings are extra pleasant if there’s somebody interesting on BBC Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs in which a famous guest chooses eight records, a book and a luxury to take to a fictional desert island. Last weekend it was Gene Pitney a man forgiven his appalling taste in music because he was so innocently unaware of it. Throughout the show, he constantly graded uniqueness. Sue Lawley, the presenter, let it go. She wasn’t so indulgent with Harrison Birtwistle, whom she berated for not writing nice tunes. Anyway, seeing as I’ll never get on there (and to spite the smug Dave Green), here is my current selection (nine, as it happens, not eight), in chronological order of appearance rather than preference:

1 Dogs Pink Floyd

2 Rock Bottom (the whole damn LP) Robert Wyatt

3 Room of Lights (LP) - Crime and the City Solution

4 Surprise Surprise Surprise (LP) - Miracle Legion

5 Get Me Dinosaur Jnr

6 Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain (LP) Pavement

7 Red Apples Smog

8 Disorder Palace Music

9 Too Late for Tonite Laura Cantrell

Very unique, as Gene would say.
