Antifamily: free music

Written by:Stephen Mitchelmore.

Antifamily make a kind of improvised pop group. They are interested in spontaneity and immediacy, hence no one plays their ‘first’ instrument and only one of the singers has ever stepped up to a mike before. All tracks are recorded with no rehearsal, and no preparation - the songs are made up on the spot (first take if possible) and then edited and mixed afterwards. This ‘tape and cut’ strategy puts them in a lineage with Can and Miles Davis they have an anti-virtuoso art-pop sensibility more reminiscent of The Fall or other post-punk bands.

Antifamily is also committed to independence. They record at home using cheap digital equipment and give the music away online (cos there aren’t any recording costs).

Apparently there is new music in the pipeline, but not on the site yet. It is more processed, electronic, and less guitar orientated. Join the mailing list on the site to find out when it’s available. I wonder why there is no contemporary explosion of independent music making, or new online labels just at the time when it has never been easier?
