Battle of Kursk
According to a correspondent on the BBC’s Ceefax pages, today is the 60th anniversary of the outbreak of the Battle of Kursk. No, I’d not heard of it either. But it remains the “largest armored battle of all time” with, so this book says, “nearly 200,000 Soviet and 50,000 German casualties within the first ten days of fighting”. One presumes this was a huge blow to the Nazi war machine, of which the invasion of Normandy on D-Day less than a year later took full advantage. (And remember, four fifths of the German army was always fighting on the Russian front). Of course, the West was so grateful to the Soviet people that it embraced Stalinism. No wait
