The Hutton Inquiry: no need to bother now
From what The Observer reports, it looks like I was spot on with my guess at why David Kelly died. The BBC tried to maintain its integrity under increasingly hostile attack from political thugs. Elsewhere, under threat of losing his career, Kelly played down his role to the Foreign Affairs Committee but knew the BBC had tapes of him blaming spin doctors for sexing up the war dossier. He relied on the BBC to protect him. It tried to. But once the government started its crusade against integrity, he was doomed.
Danny Schechter suggests the government has pressures from abroad to bring the BBC into line. It’s good that BBC Chairman Gavyn Davies is putting up a stout defence, even if he is a Scummer (that is, he supports the football team whose favourite movie is All the Pretty Horses).
