Same As Self

Written by:Chris Mitchell.

To me, my bookish minions…

Jez Collier recently emailed me to ask the following:

“I don’t know much about literature but I know what I like, and I love Will Self. I am a late starter in the joys of reading quality writers and would like your recommendation to other similar writers to Self. Whilst I would imagine that he would vehemently object to the notion of other writers having a similar style to his I am sure that you, as the editor of Spike, could point me in the right direction.”

My fairly conservative off-the-top-of-my-head suggestions were Ballard and Martin Amis. But the rest of you read a lot more fiction than me - what do you reckon? Is there anyone else writing like Self at the moment? Or anyone Self’s work owes a big debt too? Post your replies in the comments link and help Jez find some more decent writers.

And thinking about it… is there a website out there that does “if you like this author, you’ll probably like this one…”? There’s Amazon’s “people who bought this also bought this” feature but I’m thinking something a little less automated and more editorial…
