A shift away
Review of four books about Samuel Beckett in the TLS. Karl Orend reminds us that Beckett underwent an epiphany at the end of the most recent world war. Beckett, he says, “came to see the kernel of his own method in reduction, a shift away from complex expression and self-conscious virtuosity � the aesthetic of achievement.” The review will disappear in a week.
