Just a thought
The Guardian has provided an extract of the Booker Prize winner (and surely it’s the novel that won, not the author) Vernon Little God. From what we can read here, and from prize-committee member DJ Taylor’s doubts expressed last night on BBC2, this is clearly an American novel. Also, it has that fetid scent of hysterical realism as defined by James Wood.
The author has Commonwealth nationality, thus allowing it to slip by customs. But, as Taylor said, it’s like Anita Brookner winning the Pulitzer Prize. I think there’s a reason for its victory; the Australians have a phrase for it: cultural cringe.
