Sunday Night Serial
Not sure whether I was surprised or not reading the final two paragraphs of Sukhdev Sandhu's long review of Monica Ali's Brick Lane in the LRB. He says it is "a patchy but promising first novel", and is ideal material "to be dramatised into a feel-good Sunday-night serial on BBC1." And this is favourite for the Booker Prize!
Sandhu adds that this embarrassing situation "is not the author's fault: it derives from the ecstatic response to the book and the expectations this has aroused".
