Arnold lame
During the week, there was a media-orchestrated furore over the government’s reclassification of cannabis. As usual, unrepresentative sob stories from losers and their families were wheeled out to “prove” that the weed is evil. One of them, on a breakfast news show, was Sue Arnold, a journalist currently drivelling for The Observer (witness this brainless response to Radio 3’s admirable programme of John Cage concerts). She sat on the sofa and expressed horror at the government’s policy. She complained that “cannabis did this to my son ” (it was evidently very bad but I’d switched on too late to find out what happened).
Anyway, I got up and left for work wondering how cannabis became so very discerning, because it must pick out certain individuals for bad treatment while so many others take nothing but pleasure from a relaxing smoke with friends.
Seems to me that banning cannabis is about as sane and useful as banning … say … poor mothering.
