Jewish Book Week
The programme for Londonland’s Jewish Book Week is, as usual, light years away from any other literary festival line up. I swoon in the contrast. Tony Benn at 730pm on Monday followed by Jacques Derrida at 830. And on Tuesday, Aharon Appelfeld on Expressing the Inexpressible again. He must be sick of that subject by now. But how can he tell us?
Though I am only a 50 minute train journey from the capital, I shall stay in my garret, consoled by the knowledge that the desire to leave and to attend these events, which is strong, like the waves desiring the beach, is the only necessity it can provide.
