Brighton Festival books
In years gone by I’ve sneered at the Brighton Festival’s literary branch as middlebrow and obsessed with lifestyle and political chatter rather than the distinguished thing itself. This year, however, there is less to sneer at. Which is nice.
Harold Pinter, John Pilger, Richard Dawkins and Jeanette Winterson are among the stars. Yes, I know only the last is likely to discuss literature, but the others are not middlebrow; that is the distinction.
And Frank Kermode discusses the film The Stone Reader about one man’s quest to find the author of a long lost classic. I’ve heard the film’s not that great, actually.
The festival runs through May.
