I wonder if The Finishing School, the new novel by Muriel Spark, doyenne of British fiction, will be dismissed by all and sundry as "yet another book by a writer writing about writing"? Or will Spark's standing gravity, and the wondrous lightness of her prose, help them beyond their tiresome obsession with fashion?
