An appearance at the Institut Francais, London
Wednesday 12 May 2004
7:30 pm / In French and in English
Born in 1932, Jacques Roubaud has achieved over the years one of the most diverse and compelling body of works in contemporary French literature. Author of prose books, such as the Hortense trilogy, and an ongoing autobiographic project begun in 1989 with The Great Fire of London (celebrated by The Independent as the book “that his great and varied talent had always promised”), he has won fame as a poet with Some Thing Black, a collection in which he comes to grips with the death of his young wife. . Jacques Roubaud, who is also a mathematician and a member of Oulipo (the “Workshop for Potentiel Literature”), will be discussing his lifelong passion for London and British culture, as well as reading excerpts of his works, in French and in English.
