Late night

Following Paul Theroux down through Tanzania and Malawi, I heard a couple arguing as they walked down my street. It's the sort of thing Theroux notices on his travels. But one can do it lying in one's own bed. The voices faded in: " ... minute by minute you live it! You say to me ..." and then faded out. And then I heard a noise: tish, tish, which sounded like the first shots of an alien invasion. But it was followed by two firmer noises for which I can find no onomatopoeia. It was the beginning of Tainted Love by Soft Cell playing on a passing car's stereo.
