The other counterlife
Rake’s Progress links to an interview with Philip Roth’s official biographer. He tells how when he first got to know Roth, he was sent a large MS of what would become The Counterlife, a book that I still regard highly, not least for the title. Since then, and before, he hasn’t written anything as good, maybe because the titles aren’t any good too.
Also, a critical biography seems superfluous. But then again, I suppose all literature is superfluous. All life too. Though not football.
