Shelfish

The Complete Review kindly offers an English language review of Peter Handke's new German language novel, Don Juan.

More than anything, Handke is an obsessive story-teller, but, like A.S.Byatt, he is also interested in the meaning, possibilities, and consequences of story-telling, and uses his fictions to explore these.

As Handke best book since Repetition is the 85-page The Afternoon of a Writer, it's good news that this is a short novel, and in English probably a lot shorter than the German edition.

Elsewhere, rather than reviews, TEV offers a long distance perusal of his bookshelves. Is that a Thomas Bernhard top left, second one in? If it is, read that next Mr Mark! It's frustrating looking at other's bookshelves, isn't it? Always, I think: I wish I had that. But I have the same response looking at my own shelves.
