Read Daniel Green's stimulating post Merely Literary. See Golden Rule Jones' response and then Leonard Bast's (the tragic character played memorably by Samuel West in Howard's End, the only reason I know the name).

I might add something along these lines at In Writing should the muse not stand me up. During the meanwhilst, I think of Kafka's aphorism: How can one take delight in the world unless one flees to it for refuge?
