Better late

Written by:Stephen Mitchelmore.

Thomas Bernhard gets six mentions in the Guardian today! It’s a joy that Austrian literature is to the fore. The TLS also comments on the Nobel award, and mentions Bernhard three times. But Ritchie Robertson’s list of “distinguished Austrian salon des refuss” doesn’t include the greatest living Austrian author. It is truly bizarre.

See also the excellent Mark C Taylor’s What Derrida Really Meant in the NYT. Taylor wrote one of the best essays in Nowhere Without No, a memorial to Derrida’s mentor Maurice Blanchot. Compare this with Johann Hari’s cringemaking ignorance. One can only agree with Alexander Garcia Duttmann’s response at the end of the piece. Hari’s prominence as a left-wing pro-war commentator is not a coincidence it seems.
