John Peel is dead

Written by:Stephen Mitchelmore.

This is a day I’ve long dreaded.

For a month and twenty years I’ve listened to John Peel’s late night music shows. At least a few hours every week. They have been the back- and foreground of all my adult life. His voice is on so many recordings of so many of my favourite songs. You could not hear them anywhere else. We will not hear them anywhere else. It’s hard to imagine music ever being as good. But music is a happy death.

every terrible thing

is a relief

even months on end

buried in grief

are easy light times

which have to end

with the coming

of your death friend
.
